Extended Health Insurance
About 74% of families who come to us use their extended health insurance to cover part or all of the cost of assessment. Psychological assessments conducted by a registered psychologist are an eligible expense under most Canadian employer-sponsored health plans. If you or your partner have benefits through work, there is a good chance some or all of the assessment cost is covered.
What Is Typically Covered
- Services provided by a registered psychologist (C.Psych.) or psychological associate
- Psychological and psychoeducational assessments
- Annual coverage typically ranges from $1,000 to $3,000 or more per family member, depending on your plan
Coverage varies by plan. Check with your insurer for your specific benefits.
How to Use Your Insurance
- Check your plan for "psychologist" or "psychological services" coverage and your annual limit
- Ask whether a physician referral is needed for reimbursement
- After each session, we provide a detailed receipt with all the information your insurer needs
- Submit your receipt to your insurance provider for reimbursement
We do not bill insurance companies directly. You pay at the time of service and submit receipts for reimbursement. Many families combine insurance coverage from both parents' or partners' plans to cover a larger portion of the cost. If you are unsure about your coverage, we can guide you on what questions to ask your insurer.
Health Spending Accounts (HSA/HSP)
About 40% of Canadian employers offer a Health Spending Account (HSA) or Health Services Plan (HSP) as part of their benefits package. Psychological assessment fees are eligible HSA expenses, making this a tax-free way to pay for your assessment.
How HSAs Work for Assessments
- HSA funds are pre-tax dollars set aside by your employer for medical expenses
- Psychological assessments by a registered psychologist are an eligible expense under the Canada Revenue Agency guidelines
- You can use HSA funds alongside your extended health insurance to cover any remaining balance
- Check your benefits portal or contact your HR department to see your available HSA balance
HSA balances often reset at the end of your benefit year. Using them for assessment means your dollars go toward something meaningful before they expire.
Interest-Free Payment Plans
We offer interest-free payment plans so you can spread the cost of assessment over time without added financial pressure.

Payment Questions
Answers to common questions about assessment costs and payment
How much does a psychological assessment cost?
The cost depends on the type of assessment and the complexity of your needs. Assessments involve multiple sessions of testing, a detailed clinical interview, scoring and analysis, and a comprehensive written report with recommendations. We discuss exact pricing during your free consultation so you know what to expect before committing.
Does OHIP cover psychological assessments?
OHIP does not cover psychological assessments provided in private practice. However, most extended health insurance plans through your employer do cover services from a registered psychologist. You can also use Health Spending Account funds and our interest-free payment plans to manage the cost.
How do I submit receipts to my insurance?
After each session, we provide a receipt that includes all the information your insurance company needs: the date of service, the registered psychologist's name and registration number, the service description, and the amount paid. Most insurers accept submissions through their online portal or mobile app. If you need help, we can walk you through the process.
Can I use my HSA for the full assessment cost?
Yes, if your HSA balance is sufficient. Psychological assessments by a registered psychologist are an eligible medical expense under CRA guidelines. You can also combine your HSA with extended health insurance coverage. For example, your insurance may cover a portion, and your HSA can cover the remaining balance.
What if I cannot afford the assessment right now?
We understand that cost can be a barrier. Our interest-free payment plans allow you to spread the cost over 2 to 4 months with no credit check. We also encourage you to check whether your employer benefits include both extended health coverage and an HSA, as combining these often covers a significant portion. If cost is a concern, please raise it during your consultation. We will do our best to find a path that works.
Do you offer sliding scale or reduced fees?
We do not currently offer a formal sliding scale. However, our interest-free payment plans and the ability to combine insurance with HSA funds make assessments accessible for many families. If cost is a concern, please let us know during your consultation and we will work with you to explore all available options.
Are assessment fees tax deductible?
Psychological assessment fees paid to a registered psychologist are an eligible medical expense for Canadian income tax purposes. You can claim the portion not reimbursed by insurance on your tax return. An assessment may also support applications for the Disability Tax Credit, which can result in significant tax savings. We recommend consulting your tax professional for advice specific to your situation.
